What is the 2025 Jubilee Year?
The Jubilee Year is a special time of grace in the Catholic Church, offering an opportunity for spiritual renewal through pilgrimage, prayer, and acts of mercy. It includes the granting of indulgences and the opening of Holy Doors at designated sacred sites worldwide.
What are Indulgence & Holy Doors?
Indulgences are a practice in the Catholic Church that grants remission of the temporal punishment due to sins that have already been forgiven. Through acts of faith, charity, and penance—such as pilgrimage, prayer, and service—Catholics can receive indulgences for themselves or for the souls of the deceased, offering spiritual renewal and purification.
Holy Doors are special doors found in major basilicas, traditionally opened only during Jubilee Years. Passing through a Holy Door symbolizes a spiritual journey of grace and renewal, representing an invitation to draw closer to God. Pope Francis will open Holy Doors in Rome and throughout the world, including at local designated pilgrimage sites.
Who can participate in a Jubilee pilgrimage, Do I Need to be CAtholic?
Anyone! While some aspects of the Jubilee are rooted in Catholic sacramental life, all are welcome to visit these sacred places, experience the history, and take part in the spirit of hope and renewal. Non-Catholics are encouraged to join in the journey, explore the sites, and be part of a community of faith and reflection.
While Catholics may seek indulgences through specific acts of faith, all visitors can appreciate the architectural beauty, historical significance, and community atmosphere of these sacred sites.
Can Non-Catholics take part in the religious aspects?
Non-Catholics are welcome to attend and engage in reflection, though they cannot receive Holy Communion or seek indulgences. However, they can participate in the community experience and acts of charity, which are central to the spirit of the Jubilee.
